The 20th century witnessed a variety of painting traditions. In some countries, there prevails pictorial art tradition of intricately nuanced tones (for example, in Latvia), while other countries prefer combinations of local colours (like Estonia). There are countries that prioritise the idea, which used to be expressed via the plot earlier, but since the last decades of the 20th c. is increasingly conveyed via the concept (for example, in Russia). Classic art countries have always made much of the achievements of art expression. For instance, the Italians have been paying much attention to the expression of the form and colouring since the old times (e.g. Venetian art school). British painting is known for its artistic solution to the issue of the change of light. The French have elaborated the possibilities of colour painting. In Lithuania, this tradition has been upheld by ARS movement and its followers during the second half of the 20th century. They laid solid foundation for the expressive painting. The trend of expressive colour painting has survived to our days. Therefore, it is not by accident, that the painting exhibition displayed in Juškus Gallery reflects this tradition.
